What Are You Waiting to Find Out? | Reinvention Part 4
REINVENTION — PART 4
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING TO FIND OUT?
What if the only way to discover what you're capable of becoming is to actually try?
There's something interesting about having years of experience.
You get pretty good at predicting outcomes.
You've made enough mistakes to recognize warning signs. You've developed instincts. You know how to calculate costs, identify obstacles and recognize when something probably isn't going to work.
Those are valuable skills.
But occasionally, the very experience that helps you make good decisions can become the thing that prevents you from exploring new possibilities.
You start evaluating an idea before you've even given it a chance to exist.
And sometimes, you talk yourself out of trying something you might have enjoyed.
Not because you couldn't do it.
Because you couldn't guarantee the outcome.
🤔 THE PROBLEM WITH NEEDING TO KNOW
Think about the things you already know how to do.
There was a time when you didn't know how to do any of them.
You had to experiment. Ask questions. Make mistakes. Figure things out.
Somewhere along the way, you became experienced.
And experience is wonderful.
Until you start expecting yourself to approach every new opportunity with the same level of confidence you have in the things you've already mastered.
That's an impossible standard.
You can't have twenty years of experience doing something you've never tried.
Yet sometimes that's exactly what we expect of ourselves.
We want to know:
Will the investment pay off?
Will people appreciate what we create?
Will I actually be any good at it?
Could this idea turn into something bigger?
Those are reasonable questions.
But not every question can be answered before you begin.
💡 SOME ANSWERS ONLY BECOME AVAILABLE AFTER YOU START.
🎨 NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BECOME A BUSINESS
Here's another trap experienced entrepreneurs can fall into.
We become so accustomed to evaluating opportunities that we forget we're allowed to explore things simply because they interest us.
Every new idea doesn't need a business plan.
Every creative experiment doesn't need a revenue projection.
Every hobby doesn't need to become another source of income.
Sometimes you can create something simply because you're curious about what it might become.
You might discover a new skill.
You might meet someone interesting.
You might uncover an opportunity you never anticipated.
Or you might discover that you don't enjoy it nearly as much as you expected.
That's useful information too.
An experiment that doesn't produce the result you expected isn't necessarily a wasted experiment.
Sometimes the discovery IS the result.
🧰 EXPERIENCE SHOULD GIVE YOU MORE FREEDOM
After spending years building something, you accumulate more than knowledge.
You develop relationships, judgment, practical skills and an understanding of what it takes to turn an idea into reality.
All of that experience should give you more freedom to explore.
Not less.
You don't have to abandon what you've already built to become curious about something new.
You can take everything you've learned and apply it somewhere unexpected.
Consider the possibilities:
🎙️ A business owner discovers a passion for storytelling.
📚 A tradesperson becomes interested in teaching.
🎥 Someone who has spent decades working behind the scenes discovers they enjoy being in front of a camera.
🎨 Someone who has always considered themselves creative discovers an entirely different way to express that creativity.
You won't necessarily know where those interests lead.
That's part of the experience.
🚀 GIVE YOURSELF SOMETHING TO DISCOVER
There is a difference between making a reckless decision and giving yourself permission to experiment.
You don't have to risk everything you've built.
You don't have to quit your job.
You don't have to invest thousands of dollars.
You can start small.
✍️ Write something.
🎙️ Record a conversation.
💻 Learn a new piece of technology.
📚 Take a class.
💡 Revisit an idea you abandoned years ago.
🎨 Make something that might never see the light of day.
Give yourself an opportunity to discover whether there's something there worth pursuing.
And if there is?
Keep going.
If there isn't?
You've learned something.
Either way, you've moved beyond wondering.
🔴 THE QUESTION
We've spent this week talking about reinvention.
Using what's already inside you.
Becoming a beginner again.
Recognizing that you don't need permission to try something new.
But permission doesn't accomplish much if you never act on it.
Eventually, curiosity needs an opportunity to become experience.
You don't need to know exactly where a new idea will take you.
You just need to be willing to find out.
☕ TODAY'S MORNING RED QUESTION
WHAT ARE YOU WAITING TO FIND OUT?
Perhaps it's time to stop wondering what would happen if you tried.
And give yourself something new to discover.
