MAKING ROOM FOR WHAT'S NEXT

☕ MORNING RED | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2026

I've noticed something about ideas.

Sometimes we don't have a shortage of them.

We have a shortage of room for them.

Our days fill up with responsibilities, deadlines, phone calls, unfinished projects, and things that need our attention right now.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, there's something we've been wanting to try.

Something we've been thinking about building.

Something that keeps coming back to us.

💭 But here's something I've been learning.

Making room for something new is one thing.

Protecting that room when something established needs your attention is another.

Yesterday, I found myself in that exact situation.

We were working on finishing a boat wrap at Red Alpha Custom Prints.

The day was getting away from us, and we still had work to do.

But we also had a LIVE episode of Behind the X's & O's scheduled for 6 PM at Red Alpha Studios.

There was a time when I probably would have said, "We've got too much work going on. Let's cancel the show."

But yesterday, I made a different decision.

I told our customer we'd finish the boat wrap today.

And we went ahead with our show.

Not because the customer wasn't important.

Not because Red Alpha Custom Prints suddenly mattered less.

But because Red Alpha Studios matters too.

🔴 And I think that's where the real test begins.

It's easy to say you're serious about building something new when everything else is running smoothly.

But what happens when the thing you've spent years building starts competing for the same time and attention?

Do you automatically put the new thing aside?

Do you keep telling yourself you'll get back to it when things slow down?

Or do you begin treating that new thing like something worth making room for?

Because here's what I've realized.

If the new thing is always the first thing we're willing to cancel, maybe we haven't really made room for it yet.

We've just allowed it to borrow whatever time was left over.

And there's a difference.

⚖️ Making room doesn't mean abandoning your responsibilities.

It means learning to manage them differently.

Communicating with people.

Making commitments you can keep.

Building systems.

Trusting others.

And recognizing that sometimes two important things are going to need your attention at the same time.

The answer isn't always to sacrifice one for the other.

Sometimes the answer is to stop automatically assuming that the established thing gets every available minute.

After all, there was a time when the established thing was new too.

And somebody had to make room for it.

☕ Something to think about this morning:

What new thing have you been saying is important to you?

And when your schedule gets crowded, is it the first thing you push aside?

Because sooner or later, what we're building will test how serious we are about building it.

Sometimes making room for what's next means deciding that what's next deserves a place in your life right now.
